Hey, I am Riley... So here is my radio life as I know it, in a nutshell. I grew up a TV Weatherman’s daughter, and decided from a very young age that no matter what, I was going to try to fill those size 14 broadcasting shoes (and trust me I am still trying, two feet at a time). One million board-opting shifts and a thousand homemade audition tapes later, a crazy program director told this bright-eyed 17 year-old…”okay let’s see what you got kid.” So, late that Sunday night I cracked my first “hot mic,” and I haven’t looked back since.
I have always been a Central Illinois girl. Living in both Springfield and Decatur and then coming to CU for College. I graduated from the University of Illinois in ‘07 with a BA in Broadcast Journalism. I was lucky enough to be offered a part-time on-air job here at the IRG radio ranch while I was a student… and even luckier to be offered a full-time position when I graduated. I have worked in both Rock and HotAC formats over the years, and while I loved them both… I am a true blue ROCK chick. You can find me ROCKIN out Monday thru Friday on Extra 92.1 from 9-2pm.
True rock radio lovers are just about the most down to earth cool people you will ever meet; they just accept you for you. And that is exactly what I need, because what you hear with me is what you get. I am the girl who can fall out of a chair for no real reason…literally one minute in it…the next minute out of it. I’m random, I’m real, I’m strange… but I just prefer eclectic.
When people ask me why I love radio so much, I say “because I LOVE music and I love people.” Radio is the last free thing we have in this free world, and the listeners have their fancy mp3 players and a million of their favorite CDs, but I think people liked to feel connected with their community, and radio does that!
But back to this whole Weatherman’s daughter thing…I should probably tell you a little about where I came from. I was born an only child in Springfield and later moved to Decatur. My dad, who I lovingly refer to as Big Bob, has been in broadcasting for 40 plus years now. He got his start in radio play-by-play work up north and has bounced back and forth between radio and TV for his entire career. I have seen him master both, and I have to say he is his happiest doing radio… I truly believe it was his calling from birth. As for my mother, Little Sandy, she went from stay home mom to 6th grade teacher. She has been teaching for about 20 years now, and like a fine wine, only gets better with age.
I love Champaign-Urbana… its culture, its sense of community, its people…and I hope to not only build a career here, but a life and family as well.
